What Makes Our Bookkeeping Different

Not all bookkeeping services are the same. Here's what sets 406 apart.

Most bookkeepers record what happened. Ours are trained to notice what it means — because they're part of a team that also does controller, CFO, and advisory work.

Typical Bookkeeping

Reactive: Errors discovered weeks later

Inconsistent: Timing varies month to month

Siloed: Disconnected from tax and advisory

Transactional: Just data entry, no insight

Unclear: Reports without context or explanation

406 Bookkeeping

Proactive: Issues caught and resolved early

Reliable: Consistent delivery every month

Integrated: Coordinates with tax and advisory services

Contextual: Numbers with explanation and guidance

Clear: Transparent communication and support

Bookkeeping as a Foundation, Not Just a Task

Our bookkeeping services are designed to integrate seamlessly with Controller, Advisory, and CFO services — creating a complete financial system.

WARNING SIGNS

When It's Time to Stop DIY Bookkeeping

DIY bookkeeping works — until it doesn't. Here are the signals it's time to hand it off.

01

You're Spending 3+ Hours Per Week on Books

If your time is worth $50/hour, that's $600-800/month in opportunity cost. Professional bookkeeping typically costs less — and frees you to focus on revenue-generating work.

02

Errors Are Costing You Real Money

Bookkeeping mistakes have direct financial consequences:

Overpaying taxesAudit penaltiesIRS penalties & interestLost financing
03

You're Making Decisions on Gut Feel

You check your bank balance instead of profit reports. You're not sure if you can afford to hire, invest in equipment, or raise prices — because you don't have clear financial visibility.

04

Tax Season Causes Panic

Last year you scrambled to find receipts, reconcile accounts, and pull together documents. Your CPA charged rush fees, or worse — you filed an extension and paid penalties.

05

You're Considering Growth Moves

Hiring employees, applying for financing, bringing on investors, or preparing for acquisition all require clean, audit-ready books. DIY records rarely meet that standard.

The Real Cost of DIY

It's not just your time — it's the tax overpayments, penalties, missed opportunities, and stress. Professional bookkeeping pays for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work with clients remotely?
Yes — and most of our clients are fully remote. We work with businesses nationwide without ever needing an in-person meeting. Our process runs entirely through QuickBooks Online, a secure document portal, and email or video calls. You share access, we handle the books, and you get clean financials delivered every month. In-person meetings are available for clients in the Columbia Falls or Flathead Valley area if preferred.
What does bookkeeping actually include?
Monthly reconciliation of all bank and credit card accounts, categorization of transactions, accounts payable and receivable tracking, and monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow). We also handle year-end cleanup and coordinate with your tax preparer.
Do you use QuickBooks?
Yes. We work primarily in QuickBooks Online, which integrates with most payroll, invoicing, and banking platforms. If you're on a different platform, we'll evaluate whether to migrate or work within your existing system.
What's the difference between bookkeeping and accounting?
Bookkeeping is the systematic recording of transactions — the foundation. Accounting interprets and analyzes those records to produce insights and financial statements. We do both, which is why our bookkeeping clients get more value than they would from a standalone bookkeeper.
How do I know if my books are accurate?
If you can't answer 'how much did I make last month?' in under 60 seconds, your books probably need work. We do a free diagnostic review for new clients to assess the current state before quoting a monthly fee.
Can I upgrade to Controller or CFO services later?
Yes — and most clients do. We design bookkeeping engagements so they can scale into controller and CFO services without starting over. Your books are the foundation everything else is built on.
